Yamaha Portasound VSS-100
Digital Voice Sampler

 

Portable keyboard based on FM synthesis + lo-fidelity sampling.

Like SK from CASIO, VSS series is a cult amongst sampling- toys addicted.

TOY KEYBOARD 49 minikeys (C1-C5) and internal speakers (2W).
Main panel features 5 switch tabs, 5 slider potentiometers and 48 push buttons; on the right side a detachable microphone located in a specific hatch.

Rear terminal connectors:

- line signal out
- headphones

Power supply is a common 9V external PSU +)- polarity.

 

VOICE the VSS-100 engine is able to mix 2 kind of syntheses:

- Orchestra mode: 9 digital voices based on a FM chip - Sampling mode: single PCM voice at 8 bits (Main IC: YM2416)

FM the VSS contains 21 presets with no possible edit but a simple EG for sustain + 1 FM drum kit. Following Patch list:

SAMPLER up to 8 seconds in FULL mode which is the lowest quality: 12 combinations between quality sample rate and sampling time.

PERFORMANCE Special "part mode" manage up to 4 samples at the same time (1/2 sec. per part) each assigned to a fixed keyboard zone.

DRUM some basic rhythmic patterns with fm percussion:

PRESET LIST: Pops, Disco, 16 Beat, Rock'n'Roll, Country, Samba, Bossanova, Reggae, Big Band, Slow Rock, March-Polka and Waltz.   HEAR FM drum patterns

LFO a simple vibrato mode modulation with fixed frequency and depth.
