"SCSi CD rom player developped for Roland S-550 sampler "

Overview

OVERVIEW Pretty large player branded ROLAND but realized by SONY - should be equivalent of a SONY CDU-510-99, which is a single speed player (150 kb/s) with old-fashioned caddy loading. The CD5 boasted at the time to read CD sample collection for an equivalente of 165 HD floppy disks, and course it canbe used also as a plain cd audio player. Originally made for S-550 model rackmount sampler with HD5-IF board, it is also compatible with other SCSI devices like S-770 but also other brands like Akai s-1000

TERMINAL CONNECTORS The cd is quite simple, with caddy slot and its eject button, a busy-led and a headphones out for audio; note you have to use a SCSI device to have full control for CD AUDIO (e.g skip, forward...) included into the SXX OS, also some advanced functions like CUE time memort to set point for easier sampling.

- VDE power in with powerswitch
- RCE CINCH stereo out
- DIP switch for SCSI ID number assign
- a ground terminal
- an "interface connector for daisy chain" labeled as NOT USED.

SETTINGS

SETTING The CD5 must be set at the boot, choosing an appriate ID SCSI number different for each devices from 0 to 7, e.g S550 is set to 1 and cd rom to 5, an another device like iomega zip must have another one. Usually these numbers are set on the back of the machine, then it must be chain- TERMINATED. It is obvious that the CD5 is mostly interest in the ROLAND brand collection, it's a quite common SCSI player and very very slow (1X). However, consider that early machine like S-550 did not accept any others models. I had not problem to use other CD rom players with later machines like S-760
