Roland M-SE1 (1995)
String ensemble Sound expansion

Rackmount unit based on orchestral strings samples from the nineties.

The M-SE1 is part of the SOUND expansion Roland family and that's the only one with an original wavetable not directly taken from SR-JV cards series.

RACKMOUNT single unit module. Basic design: 11 buttons and a 7-segments display.

Rear panel terminal connectors:
- Midi interface
- main output
- AUX signal line input (signal is not processed by effects)


Front panel terminal connectors:
- headphones.

 

 

TECH core 16 bits microcontroller HF6415108F (part of HD6415 - h8 / 510 / 500 family) manages 28 voices polyphony. M-SE1 module is based on PCM rompler subtractive synthesis and each patch is composed by 1, 2, 3 or 4 PCM samples layers.

The Roland module series are more like a preset machine and provides mainly preset from panel - most parameters can be changes only using an external Midi SYSEX strings generator.

WAVETABLE the 16 MB internal ROM contains 162 PCM samples at 16-bits resolution.

Internal waveforms are mainly strings, like cello, violin, ensemble but also various orchestral instruments e.g harp, timpani, harpsichord or tambourine. Module can achieve also electronic sound sas it features some PCMs sampled from classic synth e.g Jupiter 8, Oberheim, P5 plus basic waveforms like saw or square (at wavetable 118-141).

PERFORMANCE Module is multitimbric and handles 7 parts + 1 drum.

Each part can be set with a single patch with variable multitimbral parameters: - reverb and chorus level amount - volume amount - stereo panning amount - pitch detune - Midi channel assign - keyboard zone assign

 

FILTER section is based on digital TVF - Time-Variant-Filter - and 3 modes

- lowpass - bandpass - highpass HEAR filter sweep

 

LFO 2 modulators features 7 shapes: triangle, sinewave, sawtooth, trapezoidal, random, sample & hold and a variation called chaos random.

Modulator destinations are: - LFO 1: amplitude - LFO 2: filter hear LFO sample and hold on filter

ENVELOPE each layer features 3 EGs:

- EG1 amplitude: 4 stages ADSR - EG2 filter: 4 stages ADSR - EG3 pitch: 4 stages ADSR

 

 

EFFECTS Effects can be applied only to master and not single parts:
- 8 reverbs +2 delays implementing famous Roland RSS System technology
- 3 choruses.

- 170 patches
- 2 rhythm sets
- 1 global setup
