Roland D-20

Multi Timbral Linear synthesizer (1988)

It's basically a roland D10 with internal sequencer and disk drive storage

Overview

OVERVIEW 61 key (velocity sensitive) with LCD display, a card slot for RAM (no waveforms expansion).
Simple pitch bender modulation on the left and a 3.5" disk drive.

RELATED MODELS:
- Roland D110 is the rackmount version
- Roland D10 same but without sequencer and floppy disk storage
- Roland D5 simpler version with no effects/sequencer/disk
- Roland PG-10 Programmer for quick edit

Terminal connectors:
- Midi Interface (no Thru port)
- main signal out
- headphones out
- power switch
- memory card slot
- Punch IN out pedal input
- pedal switch control for start stop and sustain

Sound

OSCILLATORS  intel 16 bits CPU 8097BH manages 32 voices (DAC PCM54 BB) polyphony or partial (a patch is composed by up to 4 partial); each partial being either a synth waveform (saw tooth or square with variable width) or any one of the internal 256 PCM samples. Finally Each pair of partials (1&2 and 3&4) an be assigned a Structure (13 models, see below).

PCM The sample PCM are divided into two banks, each with 128 samples.
PCM A: transient attacks (The attack samples concentrate on providing the attack envelope segments of behavior of instruments. )
PCM B:  same as A but in looped form.
NOTE: 63 samples are dedicated to drums and percussion

SOUND HIERARCHY very confusing... typical of 90 roland.
"The D-10 can produce a maximum of 32 voices using 32 Partials at the same time, A partial is the smallest unit of sound within the. D-10. A Tone consists of one to four Partials. A Tone made of only  one Partial can be played 32 voice polyphonically, but a Tone Of two
Partials has 16 voices, and a Tone of four Partials is 8 voice polyphonic. Finally Multi Timbrals".... allll righhhttt

Algorithms

The partial combines partial synthesis elements with a digital ring modulator in 7 possible pathways or algorithms: (p= pcm sample / s= digitally generated wave).
Compared to D50, the D10 adds 6 more structures, 5 with ringmods + 2 with linear partials (sample / awve)

EFFECTS eight onboard digital effects: small and medium rooms, medium and large halls, plate, and three delays. Additionally you can set reverb/delay time and effect level.

LFO single triangle-shapped modulator , very simple compared to bigger D50.

ENVELOPE 3 main groups for pitch, amplitude and filter with very similar specs: 5 times+ 4 times.

FILTER: digital resonant lowpass for SYNTH part (not pcm) like D50

Drum, sequencer, memory

DRUMS The built—in rhythm machine stores 32 different preset rhythm patterns + another 32 user programmable patterns.
You can make  a song (or tune) in a rhythm track by using those rhythm patterns. Also an internal metronome

SEQUENCER  offers nine tracks and an store approximately 16,000 notes- The maximum length of a sequence is 500 bars,
Tracks 1-7 an play a single Tone, track eight an be either a synth or a rhythm track, while track nine is a dedicated rhythm track

MEMORY  Preset Patches: 128  +  User Patches: 64.
Sounds can be saved to Midi sysex dump or to memory card (models: M256 , M512e, M128)

STORAGE DISK: 3.5" DSDD floppies and can store approximately 35,000 notes. There are four file types: Song, Sound, Rhythm and All (full memory) can be replace with more modern usb gotek.
