emu Procussion

Emu Procussion (1991)

Dedicated Drum / percussions version of the classical Proteus.

Samples drums expander from the nineties: sounds pretty old! but is it still worth a Buy today? let's check this out...

percussion module

technical data

RACK Very simple one unit rack one unit rack all made of cheap plastic for a total weight of 2 Kg. There are two different versions available with different frontal looking and logo variation, but technically they are the same.
The main panel is rather basic with 4 buttons and a data encoder for parameters values edit on a traditional 16 X 2 lines LCD with active matrix backlight, but not the most readable display in the world.

Back panel (PIC) has these connections : Midi I/O, six analog outputs assignable in monophonic mode or by pairs.
NOTE -> oddly there are no footswitch inputs nor pedal with assignable function, not to mention that trigger inputs would have been a nice extra feature for drummers.

Power supply is internal with VDE. My version has automatic switch between 110V and 220V (check IT ANYWAY!).

VOICE CPU based on Motorola 68000 manages 32 digital voices of polyphony, 16 parts (multitimbral each with own Midi channel) and layering capabilities up to four and eight sounds on each key or drum pad. A single layer be Detuned, Panned, digitally Read forward- backward with adjustable start point offset.

WAVETABLE 4Mb wavetable with over 200 waveforms coded at 39kHz in a 16 bits resolution- NOT expandable. The whole wavetable is inspired directly from Emulator III library and counts 140 samples from real percussions, 4 basic waveform, 21 mathematical generated inharmonic waves and 51 digitally created pulse PWM and FM waves .
There are also some special "CONVOLUTION" samples (at wavetable PCM 132 to -->135) that works for SPATIAL CONVOLUTION process, it's a combination of a normal waveforms with a convolved reverb one.
->For procussion wavetable list, go HERE.

LFO one Low Frequency generator with four waveforms Triangle / Saw / Sinusoidal / Square with destination to Amplitude OR Pitch of a specific layer.

ENVELOPE two EGs in total.
The first one has three segments A-H-D for Amplitude with inverse Slope switch, plus a special function called Random that generates irregular Amplitude to humanize sounds like for hihats emulation.
The second EG is slimmed down and controls only Pitch Decay, usually used for electronic percussions simulation like Simmons brain drums.

FILTER NONE

FX NONE, but some PCM have been sampled with Reverb (see "Convolution").

MATRIX flexible matrix value routing path system:

No external media for storage.

PERSONAL OPINION:

Only for budget or experimental hard editing time. Samples are a bit old and programming could be tedious.

Still worth a buy? nmmm.. NO!
